Dustin Poirier has questioned UFC matchmakers whether UFC is a legitimate sport or merely entertainment. While matchmakers face the difficult task of organizing the biggest fights and ensuring the right fighters receive title shots, their decisions largely depend on division rankings and fighters calling out opponents.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani on ‘The MMA Hour,’ Dustin Poirier suggested that Jon Jones should fight Tom Aspinall instead of Stipe Miocic in his return, as it would be more entertaining and sportingly interesting. He questioned if booking Miocic was more about entertainment than merit and also questioned why Magomed Ankalaev wasn’t fighting Alex Pereira for the light heavyweight title.
“If it’s a legit sport then I guess the next guy in line at 205 (pounds) would be Ankalaev and you have to do it just for the respect of the game. But, if it’s entertainment, Jon Jones vs Alex is the one.” Poirier said.
Alex Pereira recently defended his title against former light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka at 303. After this win, Magomed Ankalaev became the top contender for Pereira’s next fight. However, Pereira might have other options if he changes weight class.
