Islam Makhachev defeated Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 via fifth-round submission. Makhachev cements his place among the all-time greats at 155 pounds by moving into a five-way tie for the most straight defences of the UFC lightweight title (3).
Poirier competed in what might have been his last chance to win the undisputed UFC gold title; Poirier is now 0-3 in attempts to win the vacant UFC lightweight championship. He has also lost by submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira.
Arman Tsarukyan Reaches To Islam Makhachev To Fight Him Next
Arman Tsarukyan, the top lightweight contender in the UFC, declined a last-minute opportunity to challenge Islam Makhachev at Prudential Center next month, where championship gold was on the line.
Tsarukyan had previously declined a chance to fight him and exact revenge for a defeat in the current champion’s UFC debut—a decision Makhachev unanimously agreed upon, earning him honours as Fight of the Night.
The first-ever fight between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan took place at UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Olinik on short notice as the co-main event. Arman made his UFC debut against Islam Makhachev; he was given the chance when Islam’s scheduled opponent withdrew from the match.
Arman once again slammed Islam Makhachev after his victory at UFC 302. He wrote on his social media platform X, “Congrats to Islam! But don’t try to run away to another division. You’ve only defended your title once against a real lightweight, and I’m next in line.”
