Leon Edwards ultimately came away with the victory, but Colby Covington wasn’t too keen on accepting that outcome. In fact, the outspoken fighter was placing the blame squarely on the judges, claiming they were biased against him because of his unwavering support for former President Donald Trump.
“The judges have never favored me. They hate me because I support Donald Trump. Everybody hates him in this building,” said Covington at the UFC 296 press conference.
The fighter has never been shy about his admiration for the former president, and he’s even been spotted rocking Donald Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” cap on several occasions. So, it’s not too surprising that he’s pointing the finger at political affiliations as the reason for his defeat. But the stats kind of tell a different story. According to the numbers, Edwards landed more significant strikes and generally looked the sharper fighter throughout the bout. So it’s hard to argue that the judges were way off the mark in their scoring.
