The UFC Heavyweight division has been among the most exciting places in recent years. Jon Jones is the reigning champion in the division, and he became a two-division champion in the UFC after coming out of a hiatus and finishing Cyril Gane in the first round. The world wanted to witness former champion Francis Ngannou taking on Jon Jones in the cage, but UFC president Dana White explained why that fight did not occur.
Dana White recently appeared in an interview and revealed a ton of things, including the reason the super fight between Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones did not take place this calendar year.
Dana White on Francis and Jon Jones fight
Francis Ngannou dominated the UFC’s heavyweight division before Jon Jones became the champion. Ngannou signed for a different MMA organization, PFL, and even fought in the boxing ring. Francis and Jones were the titans in the UFC who never clashed in the middle of the octagon. Dana White, in an interview given with Shannon Sharpe, said,
We did everything in our power to make that fight. Not only Jon Jones is not afraid of Francis, he is also the baddest fighter to ever live in any combat sports…. He goes out for three years, come back and beats Cyril Gane like that. Easily. In my opinion he does the same thing to Francis, hundred percent. Francis didn’t want to fight Jon Jones.
White revealed that Francis Ngannou did not want to fight the all-time great Jon Jones. He clarified that Jones would beat Francis Ngannou if they ever clashed in the octagon. White was fanboying over how Jon finished Cyril Gane in the octagon in the first round after his three-year hiatus from fighting.
He pointed out that Ngannou had to work hard to win the decision over the Frenchman Cyril Gane. Jon Jones last fought in 2023, whereas Ngannou was last spotted in the boxing ring against Anthony Joshua earlier this year when he got knocked out in the second round.
