The UFC 301 just concluded this month. The event was built around the Australian Steve Erceg taking on Alexandre Pantoja for the Flyweight title of the world. The event took place in the hometown of Pantoja, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The main event was pretty competitive, with Pantoja reclaiming the belt in the octagon. Steve Erceg finally broke his silence on what happened in Brazil.
Erceg was a three-fight veteran when he took on Alexandre Pantoja. Many felt it was too early for the man from the Kangaroo land to fight for a title. He impressed many when he took on the champion and gave him a tough fight.
Steve Erceg on UFC 302 Loss
Flyweight contender Steve Erceg faced the massive challenge of taking on Alexandre Pantoja and beating him throughout five rounds. He showed up big time and inflicted heavy damage on his opponent in the octagon. Ultimately, his first title fight didn’t go his way, as Pantoja lost a unanimous decision to Steve Erceg. Erceg reflected on his loss to Pantoja. He said,
I’m obviously devastated. Despite the short notice or three fights in the UFC, I came to win. I thought I could do it. I blew it.
Erceg made it clear that he blew the chance of acquiring UFC gold. Steve Erceg wanted to capture the title in his first title fight in the company. Not many fighters get multiple chances to fight for the title at the UFC. Erceg was one of the lucky ones to have gotten that after only three fights in the company. Steve Erceg is still one of the top contenders in the Flyweight division of the UFC. If he gets a few more wins under his belt, he will surely be able to get back in title contention.
Steve Erceg is still ranked amongst the top ten Flyweights in the company. Erceg displayed a few versatile skills when he took down Pantoja and beat him heavily. He showed that he could stand amongst some of the best fighters in the world if forced to. It will be interesting to see what happens soon.
