Life isn’t a single-player game where one grinds away at one skill and expects a high score—it’s more like an open-world RPG, where one can max out different attributes and still crush it. David Martinez is living proof of that. While most people are stuck choosing between one career path like it’s the only character class in a game, he is out here pulling a Spider-Man—swinging between saving lives in the operating room and fighting in the octagon. Landing that UFC contract from Dana White while also being a surgeon is like unlocking a secret level in life that most people didn’t even know existed. And he showed with enough hustle and heart, one doesn’t have to choose a single path; as they can create a whole new genre.
Ahead of landing his contract at Dana White’s Contender Series, David Martinez shared that he chose to leave his medical profession to chase what he sees as the greatest achievement of his life. For many aspiring MMA fighters, getting into the UFC is the ultimate goal they have dreamed about since day one of their training. David has turned that dream into reality, following in the footsteps of his sister, Melissa Martinez, who’s already making her mark in the organization.
He said via MMAJunkie, “I stopped the medicine career for a little time, because I want to put all my focus, all my time in this opportunity. Because I know this opportunity is the biggest opportunity and the biggest league in the world. It was very difficult, but I make a decision. For medicine, we have a lot of time. For this sport, it’s a very short career.”
Indeed, just like his fighting career, becoming a surgeon demands immense dedication and sacrifice. Consequently, Martinez’s decision to leave the medical field wasn’t easy. However, it turned out to be a worthy move.
Dana White’s Contender Series: David Martinez vs. Xavier Franklin
Talking about the fight, Martinez began aggressively, focusing on Franklin’s lead leg with hard kicks. Previously unbeaten Franklin started to come back in the second round with effective counters that limited Martinez’s activity. However, Martinez responded by landing more leg kicks and gaining the upper hand in their exchanges. In the end, the judges awarded Martinez the victory by unanimous decision, marking his opponent’s first career loss.
