Once again, Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen have brought up how Dana White has been biased toward Jon Jones and has not considered Islam Makhachev the best Pound 4 Pound fighter.
In the main event of UFC 302 last Saturday, the UFC lightweight champion submitted former interim champion Dustin Poirier, marking the third successful defense of his championship.
Following UFC 302, UFC CEO Dana White grabbed national attention when he declared that, despite Jones’s recent absence, he still believes Jones is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
“Yet to See Jon Jones Against The Best Right Now”
In 2023, the UFC updated its Pound-for-Pound rating after UFC 285 events. Jon Jones was ranked #1 in the Men’s P4P rankings after his dominant submission victory over Ciryl Gane in the first round by guillotine choke for the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship.
The UFC held its first match since 2020 at UFC 285. When he defended his light-heavyweight title against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247, that was the last time we saw him in action. After a fight with Dana White in August 2020, just a few months after his battle with Reyes, “Bones” vacated his UFC light-heavyweight title.

As Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen stated during one of the episodes of Good Guy/Bad Guy. The hosts say that no doubt, Jon Jones has undoubtedly fought against the best fighters to win his titles, but it was around 2021. He has been inactive for a long time, whereas Islam Makhachev has always proven to be the best by winning all the scheduled bouts.
“Alexander Volkonovski was universally considered the number one pound for pound fighter in the world and Dana said whoever wins this fight will be the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Islam won that fight, and then he beat him again to prove that at 145 and 155 two weight classes, he is the best in the world.” Daniel Cormier also added, “Jon Jones has beaten the best, but we hadn’t had the opportunity to see him against the best right now.”
Makhachev Proves Himself In The UFC
Makhachev won four of his previous five fights in the first or second round before Poirier forced him into the fifth. He has also won seven of his last eight fights via stoppage; the only match Alexander Volkanovski has managed to outlast him is a decision.
At this point in his career, he is 26-1, quite near Jones’ 27-1 (1) record.
