After Islam Makhachev’s submission win over Dustin Poirier earlier this year, the lightweight champion sustained a ligament tear in his hand, forcing him out of action. Arman Tsarukyan, a top contender for a potential title fight against Makhachev, floated the idea of an interim title due to the champion’s injury. However, UFC President Dana White has shut down Tsarukyan’s calls for an interim UFC lightweight title, making it clear that Makhachev will retain his belt as he recovers.
The lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, disclosed his hand injury a few months ago and now likely requires surgery. Meanwhile, the UFC President dismissed Tsarukyan’s demands. While Speaking with MMA journalist Manouk Akopyan, White stated:
“Yeah, Islam’s fought so many times and is always willing to jump up and take up a fight. So no, there won’t be any interim title. When he’s ready to go, we’ll go. We have a plan. We’re looking at it right now on when he would fight.”
Makhachev and Tsarukyan were initially scheduled to fight at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi next month. However, Makhachev’s physical issue has led to his removal from the card. His return date is still uncertain, but Dana White is working to build a top-notch fight card for the event without the lightweight champion.
