It’s been over a year since MMA fans last saw Jon Jones in the UFC octagon. There were speculations that “Bones” might get a chance to face the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira on his return. However, it seems that fans should leave this dream matchup for the future.
While there are reports that claim Jones and Pereira will appear at the same UFC pay-per-view event, they will certainly not face each other. According to a recent X post by Rueben Carter, Jones is being targeted to face his canceled UFC 295 match opponent, Stipe Miocic, at the UFC 309 main event. Meanwhile, Pereira could face Magomed Ankalaev in the co-main event on November 9, 2024.
However, neither Dana White nor anyone from the UFC has commented on this report. But if the reports are true, the matches might get official sooner or later.
Former Interim Lightweight Champion Previously Rejected The Idea of Alex Periera vs. Jon Jones
Dustin Poirier expressed his discomfort with the matchmakers, even considering a matchup between Jones and Pereira. He questioned the legitimacy of the UFC and asked if it was a sport or an entertainment promotion.
Speaking on The MMA Hour, ‘The Diamond’ voiced for Pereira facing Magomed Ankalaev for the sake of respect for the game. He said,
“If it’s a legit sport then I guess the next guy in line at 205 (pounds) would be Ankalaev and you have to do it just for the respect of the game. But, if it’s entertainment, Jon Jones vs Alex is the one.”

Dustin Poirier also suggested Jon Jones should face Tom Aspinall in his return bout instead of Stipe Miocic. However, ‘The Diamond’ can still be happy as it seems the matchmakers only listened to his request for Pereira vs. Ankalaev, which is reportedly scheduled for UFC 309.
