There’s no doubt that UFC boss Dana White is a man of his word; he typically follows through on his promises, no matter how challenging the task. However, he’s hit a snag by failing to deliver on his long-awaited commitment to host a fight in Africa for Dricus Du Plessis’ title defense. Fans have been looking forward to this moment, and the buzz has been strong, but it didn’t go as planned once again. Adding to that, White also announced the next title challenger for the South African champion, keeping the excitement alive in the UFC.
After the recent Dana White’s Contender Series event, the UFC boss returned to address questions from the media. With talk of Du Plessis’ title defense, he was asked for an update on UFC Africa, which was supposed to be the location for the South African champion’s title defense. In answer to that, White shared some disappointing news, stating that he encountered issues securing an arena and that it was difficult to make it happen.
In his words, “You know how bad I want this. I’ve been trying to get this thing done. The arena situation there is tough. It’s tough to pull off. So, that’s been the challenge with Africa as a whole; we’re trying to figure it out.”
White notes that the only arena he finds requires the fight to take place outdoors, which he wants to avoid due to issues like rain, humidity, bugs, and other factors. The UFC boss is not keen on hosting an event under those conditions. So, for now, the plans for the event are on hold.
Dana White Confirms Sean Strickland’s Title Shot Against Dricus Du Plessis for UFC Middleweight Championship
While the UFC head honcho confirms that the fight won’t take place in Africa, he also shared some good news for fans waiting for the Strickland vs. Du Plessis rematch. Recently, the coach of UFC middleweight champion Strickland mentioned that he is eyeing a title defense against Khamzat Chimaev. However, when inquiring if Strickland is getting a title shot, White rejects the idea of Chimaev’s fight. Instead, he replies, “Tarzan” will be fighting for the belt.
Talking about the location, it seems the fight will take place in Australia, which Strickland isn’t too happy about. However, it will be fascinating to see if Du Plessis can retain his title against ‘Tarzan.’ Especially after a controversial fight that ended in his favor. If he succeeds, it could significantly change the dynamics of the division.
