Cory Sandhagen’s fight against the undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov is just around the corner. As such, the bantamweight contender is engaged in interviews and media stuff. He recently dropped a surprising revelation about his upcoming opponent. A high-stakes bout at UFC Abu Dhabi on August 3rd will feature their clash.
Sandhagen, known for his analytical approach, has identified something unique about Nurmagomedov. It’s not what you’d expect from a fighter hailing from the wrestling hotbed of Dagestan.
“Coming from [Dagestan], everyone expects you to be a really good grappler. I know that he was a little bit more involved with Muay Thai and kickboxing than he was just grappling. He definitely has that part of his game. The most unique thing about him is his striking style. His grappling is pretty by the book, that Dagestani style. But the striking is really what kind of makes him different than those other guys. The type of techniques he uses, the types of kicks he uses,” said Sandhagen via SHAK MMA.
Sandhagen revealed that Umar Nurmagoedov’s striking is what separated him from others in his family. He said that Umar and his brother Usman grew up training Muay Thai. The Nurmagomedov family is known for its heavy wrestling background. But Umar has become the variation in his clan with his exceptional striking.
This revelation adds an intriguing layer to their upcoming clash at Abu Dhabi. Cory Sandhagen, ranked No.2 in the division, isn’t taking this challenge lightly. He has clearly done his homework on the No.10 ranked Nurmagomedov. This fight will most likely be for the No. 1 title contender in the Bantamweight division.
