In a recent Instagram post, Chael Sonnen shared a video emphasizing that there’s only one real team in the world—Team Khabib Nurmagomedov. Sonnen criticized the Lakers, pointing out that players leave the team with big checks, suggesting a lack of loyalty. He contrasted this with Team Khabib, where loyalty runs deep.
He said, “Guys we got one real team in the world, it’s not the Lakers. Those guys are w****. You write a big enough check they’ll put your jersey on. It’s not any college with the NIL. The only real team we have is Khabib’s team. Where guys actually comes to the same gym and they come up together and they help one another.”
According to Sonnen, everyone on the team is treated equally—training in the same gym, eating the same food, and pushing each other to be their best. This sense of unity and commitment is what sets Team Khabib apart, in his view.

Sonnen shared on X a few days ago the incredible rise of the Nurmagomedov family in combat sports. With Islam Makhachev defending his UFC title at UFC 311, Umar Nurmagomedov fighting for his own, and Usman Nurmagomedov defending his PFL belt shortly after, Sonnen pointed out the undeniable power the family holds in the sport.
Sonnen also paid tribute to the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the driving force behind their success. He praised Abdulmanap’s system for creating some of the sport’s best fighters and wrestlers. Sonnen believes the Nurmagomedovs might just be the greatest family in combat sports, with Abdulmanap’s impact deserving a Hall of Fame spot.
