Sean O’Malley has opened up about a major aspect of UFC’s Apex facility ahead of his fight at UFC 299.
Sean O’Malley will enter the octagon this weekend to defend his UFC bantamweight title for the first time. He would take on Marlon Vera in a highly anticipated rematch. The two previously fought each other back in 2020 when Vera became the only fighter to have secured a victory over O’Malley.
Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera fought each other at Dana White’s UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas during the peak of Covid when there were no fans allowed. Interestingly, the octagon at the Apex is considerably smaller than what we see at arenas.

Speaking about it during a recent appearance on the PBD podcast, O’Malley revealed that it is weird fighting inside a smaller octagon. While suggesting that it favors wrestlers and grapplers more, the UFC bantamweight champion said:
“I fought in the Apex 3 times, the small cage. It is very weird that the UFC have got a small cage and a big cage…It’s way different, it’s like playing half court football or basketball…It would benefit like wrestlers, grapplers, guys that want to get a hold of you. I love a big cage…my main goal is to not let a motherf*ker grab me.”

Over the past few weeks, a potential MMA fight between Sean O’Malley and boxer Ryan Garcia has become the talk of the town. During the same appearance on the PBD podcast, O’Malley made a bold claim by suggesting that he could beat Garcia in numerous ways.
Upon being asked how he believes a potential fight against Ryan Garcia would turn out, O’Malley said:
“It depends what you want to see. You want me to choke him? You want me to knock him out? You want me to kick his legs? What do you want me to do? I’ll do whatever you want. I can do anything to him… I would talk to the team. I would say, ‘Hey boys, do you want me to knock him out or submit him?’ I’d let people pick.”
