The lightweight division has always been a breeding ground for intense rivalries. Back in 2019, a relatively unknown Arman Tsarukyan stepped into the UFC octagon against Islam Makhachev. Despite losing that night, Tsarukyan showed the world he belonged among the elite. Fast forward to 2024, and the landscape has dramatically shifted.
Tsarukyan has evolved into a legitimate title threat. He has left a trail of dominated opponents in his wake. His recent demolition of Charles Oliveira at UFC 300 was a statement that echoed through the division’s halls. Now, as he prepares for his rematch with champion Makhachev at UFC 311, an interesting wrinkle has emerged: the return of Khabib Nurmagomedov to Makhachev’s corner. But Tsaruyan is not worried about it.
“His [Khabib] knowledge and his ability to give some good advice. But for me, it’s quite the opposite, and it’s motivation. When I had my UFC debut I entered the Octagon. Nobody knew me but Islam had Abdulmanap and Javier in his corner two of the most famous and greatest coaches in the world,” said Tsarukyan via Red Corner MMA.
Arman Tsarukyan is actually fired up about Khabib Nurmagomedov’s presence in Islam Makhacgev’s corner. He felt that it served as rocket fuel for his motivation. His fearless attitude has propelled him to the #1 spot, and it shows no sign of slowing down.
This rematch isn’t just another fight; it’s a collision course five years in the making. The first bout showed glimpses of what could be, but both fighters have transformed since then. Makhachev has become the dominant champion many predicted, while Tsarukyan has developed into a complete martial artist who can hang with anyone.

Makhachev’s rise to the top hasn’t exactly been a fairy tale. The Dagestani warrior had to claw his way through the lightweight division, proving doubters wrong at every turn. His recent victories over Alexander Volkanovski, Charles Oliveira, and Dustin Poirier cemented his spot atop the P4P rankings. But Tsarukyan sees things differently.
“No, he [Makhachev] doesn’t deserve it… I agree the No.1 pound-for-pound is Jon Jones because he’s a legend. He’s still fighting,” said Tsarukyan via MMA Junkie.
Arman Tsarukyan’s reasoning is simple and refreshingly honest: as long as Jon Jones is actively competing, no one else deserves that top spot. It’s hard to argue against Jones’ resume. The man has been collecting skulls since some of today’s fighters were still playing with action figures. Tsarukyan believes Makhachev’s time at the top will come, but only after Jones hangs up his gloves.
