Former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has given ultimatum to Sean O’Malley following the latter’s victory over Marlon Vera.
Sean O’Malley was in action this past weekend at UFC 299. In what was his first title defense against a former foe, O’Malley put on a masterclass to get the better of Vera. Going into the fight, ‘Chito’ was considered the champion’s biggest test so far having already lost to him in their first matchup.
However, O’Malley not only managed to retain his title, he did it spectacularly. Following the bout, ‘Suga’ expressed his desire of wanting to fight Ilia Topuria. Topuria won the UFC featherweight title last month after beating Alexander Volkanovski. Since then, Volkanovski has been eager to get a rematch.
With Sean O’Malley interfering in his plans for a rematch, Alexander Volkanovski has recently given his thoughts on the same. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, the former UFC featherweight champion said:
“He called out Ilya. Look, unless you fight Ilya anytime soon. If you can do a turn around anytime soon, I guess you can have it because again, I’m having a little rest but I’m fighting him later in the year or whatever that is. So I know I’m fighting for the title next. So if you are going to try and squeeze that in, it better be soon because I’m next. So there you go. There’s your little window if you want it.”

Robert Whittaker gives his thoughts on the future of Alexander Volkanovski
Alexander Volkanovski has been at the receiving end of two consecutive knockouts. His first knockout loss came against Islam Makhachev in their rematch last year. Following this, he returned to the featherweight division to take on Ilia Topuria. However, his fate wasn’t very different as ‘The Great’ ended up suffering yet another knockout loss.
As a result, Volkanovski announced that he would be taking a break from competition and giving his body time to heal properly. Since then, a lot of questions have been raised as the Australian is pushing towards the end of his career.
Speaking about the same, Robert Whittaker gave his thoughts on how Alexander Volkanovski does not have the luxury of time. While suggesting that Volkanovski is in a hard decision-making period right now, the former UFC middleweight champion said:
“He needs a break, his head needs a break, but how much of a break can he have? He is 35. He is pushing the last couple of years of his prime. How much of a break can he afford? I think he’s in a tricky place, it’s not hard, they’re all good problems. But he’s in a hard decision-making period right now.”

That said, there’s no denying the fact that Alexander Volkanovski is in a tough spot right now. It will be interesting to see if he could return to winning ways upon his return.
