Everyone is wondering if Islam Makhachev can break Khabib Nurmagomedov’s record for most lightweight title defenses. The answer will come on January 19th when Makhachev defends his title against Arman Tsarukyan. However, before this defense, the Russian fighter has already stated his intention to pursue the welterweight title.
While a potential Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria fight is possible, the lightweight champion doesn’t seem particularly interested in it. Makhachev has his sights set on becoming a double champion and is focused on the welterweight title. In a recent interview with Shak MMA, he stated:
“Topuria doesn’t make sense. For what? For belt, for money. I have money, I don’t need. I need the second belt.”
Islam Makhachev believes it's more likely he'll fight for the welterweight title against the winner of Belal vs. Shavkat, rather than facing Ilia Topuria in 2025:

Islam Makhachev’s next move in the UFC may be uncertain, but one thing is clear he plans to make his upcoming title defense unforgettable. In the meantime, he’s training with the best, including Khabib Nurmagomedov. Additionally, ‘The Eagle’ will be in Makhachev’s corner for the fight.
