The New York Yankees, their fan base, as well as Giancarlo Stanton thought they had a 1-0 lead in the first inning of their Wild Card game against the Boston Red Sox.
Yankees radio play-by-play announcer John Sterling also thought it was gone, which is why his below call is so freaking hilarious. With nobody on and two outs in the top of the first inning, Giancarlo Stanton stepped to the plate to face Nathan Eovaldi. On a 0-1 pitch, Stanton blasted the ball high into the night sky in left field.
The camera shot made it look like it was gone. It was not and Stanton only ended up with a single.
“There it goes — deep left, it is high, it is far, it is gone! Out of the ballpark! A Stantonian home run!” Sterling shouted.
“Now what — what did I do wrong? What did I see wrong?” Sterling asked. “He’s at first base.”
He shouldn’t feel too bad since ESPN play-by-play announcer Matt Vasgersian did the exact same thing.

“Oh, he got another one,” Vasgersian said on the ESPN call. “HE GOT ANOTHER ONE!”
“No — it’s off the Monster!” Vasgersian said.
