The Yankees locked up Gerrit Cole possibly for the remainder of his career when they inked him to a nine-year, $324 million contract in free agency. The deal became the highest annual salary given to a pitcher in MLB history.
On Thursday, he did not live up to that contract as he gave up back-to-back home runs in each of the first two innings against the Detroit Tigers in his third start of spring training.
Following a double to the lead-off man, Cole gave up a HR to Travis Demeritte before Miguel Cabrera stepped up and completely tore the back off the baseball on the 1st pitch he saw.
Those same two players took him deep in the very next inning.
Gerrit Cole’s final line against the Detroit Tigers today:
2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.
