A blockbuster trade proposal has the New York Mets dealing All-Star slugger Pete Alonso to an American League powerhouse that would drastically shake up the pennant race.
Pete Alonso is in the final year of his contract, and a trade feels increasingly likely as the Mets continue slipping further out of the playoff race. Entering play on Friday, they’re 30-37 and three games out of the final wild card spot in the NL.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer recently looked at the best possible landing spots for the three-time All-Star first baseman. Rymer proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has the Mets dealing Alonso to the Subway Series rival New York Yankees, along with pitcher Adam Ottavino and cash, for prized pitching prospect Chase Hampton:
“The Yankees haven’t had much trouble scoring runs. Or really any, as they’re up to an MLB-leading 359 for the season.”The Yankees haven’t had much trouble scoring runs. Or really any, as they’re up to an MLB-leading 359 for the season.
Their lineup nonetheless feels thin. Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are obviously amazing, but then you get into a discussion about their next-best hitter that, frankly, doesn’t have a satisfactory answer.
Though Gleyber Torres is the bigger disappointment on the right side of the infield, Rizzo has been the bigger offender on offense. His eight home runs only do so much to redeem a .626 OPS, the lowest such mark among Yankees regulars.”
Pete Alonso is off to a slow start, with a .233 batting average and a .774 OPS that’s well off his career sum of .861. Nonetheless, he’s still displaying plenty of power in that bat with 14 homers and 32 RBI.

The Yankees have two MVP candidates crushing it offensively in Aaron Judge and another pending free agent in Juan Soto. But as Rymer noted, the depth in the lineup is thin beyond those two.
No team digs the long ball more than the Yankees, who also play in one of baseball’s most hitter-friendly stadiums. So adding Alonso to that lineup would only strengthen the Yankees’ chances of reaching the World Series.
Pete Alonso Would Make Yankees WS Favorites
There’s plenty of baseball to be played, but the Pinstripes are unquestionably the team to beat in the AL with a 49-22 record that has them 2.5 up on the Baltimore Orioles for the AL East.
Adding another prolific power hitter like Alonso to complement Judge and Soto would make this Yankees lineup that much more dangerous. If GM Brian Cashman could somehow complete a trade with his cross-town rivals, there’d be little debate about the World Series favorite.
