J.D. Martinez is one of those reputed veteran sluggers remaining on the free-agent market. Martinez is ready to play for another year or two, but not many teams are ready to give him an offer. Just like Martinez, veteran first baseman Justin Turner is also a free agent.
With spring training nearing, these players are struggling to find a team. Along with the two sluggers is another forgotten pitcher, Kyle Gibson. While spring training is just around the corner, here’s a protected last resort landing spot for each player.
J.D. Martinez To The Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays have not done much this offseason. Competing with top opponents like the Yankees and Orioles is going to be a challenge. Yet, there is still hope for the team to put up a good fight. Martinez to the Rays will be a decent fit for the team. The veteran can mentor younger hitters and sign a short-term deal.
At 37, it’s hard for J.D. Martinez to secure a significant amount. The Rays will be able to get the slugger for a reasonable price.
Justin Turner To The Cincinnati Reds
It’s going to be a tough call for Justin Turner with younger sluggers like Anthony Rizzo on the market. Turner’s stint with the Blue Jays and Mariners is over, and both teams are not interested in a reunion. It’s a tough call for now, but the Cincinnati Reds can be a perfect destination for Tuner. The Reds signed Gavin Lux and are slowly rebuilding their team.
Adding an experienced slugger like Justin Tuner will benefit the team. However, Tuner will still need to compete with J.D. Martinez and other sluggers.
Kyle Gibson To The San Diego Padres
Kyle Gibson is eagerly waiting to pitch, and the Padres can be a decent fit. San Diego is currently dealing with several issues. Their offseason has been disappointing, and the ownership battle has made things worse. The Padres can pursue Gibson since they are planning to part ways with Dylan Cease.

Gibson will be easy on the pocket, and the same goes for J.D. Martinez and Justin Turner. However, it’s hard for these players to find a spot on large-market teams. Most teams are already set with their starting lineup, but there is still hope for these three veterans as spring training looms.
