The Boston Red Sox are keeping a low-risk strategy while moving into the offseason. They are bringing back their relief pitcher for a minor-league deal. While there are plenty of free agents already available in the market, the team is recalling the pitcher.
As per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox have agreed to a minor league deal with Robert Stock on Tuesday. According to the reports, he will also enjoy an invitation to the Spring Training at the camp. Stock, who last pitched in the MLB in 2021, has shown flashes of potential throughout his career. Thanks to his high-90s fastball and unique arm angle.
While his major league numbers include a 4.71 ERA and a high walk rate, his recent performance in international leagues hints he still has something to offer. He had a standout stint in the Mexican League, where he posted a 3.38 ERA over 98 2/3 innings in 2024. For Boston, Stock represents insurance against the inevitable uncertainties of a long MLB season.

Although, the Red Sox bullpen has already undergone significant changes. They’ve lost key contributors like Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin. But they have compensated with adding experienced arms like Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson. With starters such as Lucas Giolito recovering from surgery, Stock will add up to the flexibility of a reliever and a starter for Boston.

Boston Red Sox Are Playing Big For Offseason
While they have their eyes set on Stock, the Boston Red Sox have not forgotten their signing quests. They are heavily interested in All-Star slugger Alex Bregman, who seemingly checks all the boxes for what the team needs. But amidst the buzz around Bregman, another name has emerged that could be an intriguing fit. And that is former Baltimore Orioles standout Anthony Santander.

After smashing 44 home runs in 2024, Santander’s projected market value is set at just over $88 million for a five-year deal. And he could be a more budget-friendly option compared to what Bregman is likely to command. However, with the Red Sox facing an outfield logjam, they’ll need to figure out if they can carve out a spot for Santander. They will have to check whether that means making room in the outfield or shifting him into a designated hitter role.

While the prospect of Santander hitting rockets out of Fenway Park is certainly tantalizing, it won’t be easy for the Red Sox to secure his services. With teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels also in the running, the competition will be tough. On top of that, rumors are swirling that Santander might be open to a shorter-term deal.
If they miss out on Bregman, Santander could definitely bring some much-needed power to the lineup. Especially as a replacement for Tyler O’Neill. Still, it’s clear that Bregman remains the top priority for the Red Sox as they aim to revamp their roster and make a strong push for success in the upcoming season.
