An unfortunate fan was the victim of an errant flying bat that found its way into the stands during the Chicago Cubs’ outing against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday night.
Fenway Park has signs warning fans that objects may leave the field and make it into the stands. And Sunday’s game proved to be a reminder.
Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya was facing an 89-mph splitter from Boston’s Tanner Houck on an 0-2 count in the third inning. Amaya took a swing that sent the bat flying at quite a velocity into the stands, and it appeared to have hit someone.
The Chicago Cubs player could only look on while other fans gathered around the victim.

Boston Herald reporter Mac Cerullo reported that the bat nearly struck a Fenway pizza vendor and appeared to hit a fan, who received treatment from medics.
“The fan was just wheeled away by Fenway Park’s medical staff,” he shared via Twitter/X.
Chicago Cubs Incident Is Just One Example Of How Risky Baseball Can Be
There’s always a risk of someone getting hit by a flying object at a baseball game or even in practice, as Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jakob Junis found out last week. Junis was walking onto the field when he got struck in the throat by a line drive.
Of course, something doesn’t have to come flying at you for you to get injured.
Red Sox rising star Tyler O’Neill was involved in a scary collision two weeks ago, having experienced an unwanted coming together with Rafael Dewers. He suffered a gash on his forehead that required eight stitches.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs lost to the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on the night.
We hope the fan is okay.
