Shohei Ohtani has a bat boy to thank following the latter’s quick actions on Wednesday night.
The Los Angeles Dodgers star put in a record-breaking performance against the Chicago White Sox but was also quite lucky not to get hurt as he looked to be in the way of a speedy ball zinging in his direction.
The Dodgers were preparing to bat for an inning when a ball came Ohtani’s way, possibly from an errant throw. He saw it in time and tried to duck out of the way, but Javier Herrera, a bat boy for the team, made an impressive catch at the last second.
The move saved Ohtani from a likely hit, with bench coach Danny Lehmann also trying to get out of the way.
Ohtani’s new interpreter, Will Ireton, could only stare in shock while manager Dave Roberts stood up and clapped.

“Kid is definitely getting a Porsche,” a fan commented.
“He just caught a rocket bare handed,” said another.
“Looks like more of a pizza party type situation, we don’t do raises here,” a third joked.
“he can also get a cricket contract — what a catch!” a user observed.
Herrera made the catch seem routine as he calmly handed the ball off to a fan and nodded his head.
Shohei Ohtani Set A New Dodgers Record
Shohei Ohtani had a night to remember as he finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and two walks. He set a new Dodgers franchise record, having reached a streak of 10 straight outings with an RBI.
“There have been a lot of opportunities with runners on base,” he said through Ireton after the win. “All I’m trying to do is have a quality at-bat, so I think it’s the result of that.”
“Really, my approach is to swing at strikes and just making sure that my posture and everything else is lined up.”
The Japanese sensation is batting .444/.563/1.194 with eight home runs and 17 RBI amid his RBI streak.
