Ask anyone who they think is the worst umpire in Major League Baseball right now, and most will likely tell you it is Angel Hernandez. During last night’s game between the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays, the 57-year-old added yet another lowlight to his rather atrocious resume.
In the bottom of the fifth, with no outs and an 0-1 count to Jays centerfielder Randal Grichuk, Yanks pitcher Masahiro Tanaka appeared to throw a perfect pitch right down the middle of the strike zone…
…And Hernandez called it a ball.
Seriously. That pitch was perfect. Even MLB.com’s gametracker had it right in the middle of the plate. It’s pitch #2 in the image below:
Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

And to make matters worse, on the very next pitch — with a 1-1 count, rather than an 0-2 count — Grichuk blasted a solo home run to cut New York’s lead to 2-1. The Jays would eventually go on to win the game by a score of 4-3.
So I guess Yankees fans can blame this loss on Hernandez’s horrible calls…and many of them did just that.
