Minnesota Twins’ shortstop Kyle Farmer required surgery after taking a pitch to the face in a scary moment against the Chicago White Sox in Wednesday’s game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning of Wednesday’s home game at Target Field, Chicago pitcher Lucas Giolito threw a 92 MPH pitch that hit Farmer in the face. The Minnesota shortstop was on the ground for several minutes and had to be taken out of the game.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli stated that the news on Farmer’s status wasn’t as bad as they expected. Baldelli added that there didn’t appear to be any fractures, though Farmer would need surgery to realign his teeth.
Dustin Morse, who works in the Twins’ PR/Communications department, later stated that Farmer underwent “successful surgery on his lower lip” as well as four bottom teeth. Morse added that “minimal hardware” was needed “to maintain the integrity of the teeth.”

The Twins also lost star centerfielder Byron Buxton in Wednesday’s afternoon tilt. Buxton was injured after colliding with White Sox shortshop Lenyn Sosa while the former attempted running to second base.
Buxton landed head first into the ground and was down for several moments, but he was able to get up and walk it off without any assistance. Buxton appeared to have avoided serious injury, and he was making humorous comments to reporters after the game.
Minnesota held on for a 3-1 victory over their division rivals to improve to 8-4 on the season. Baldelli’s group now travels to New York to begin a four-game series against the New york Yankees on Thursday.
