In case you haven’t been paying attention, Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani has taken the baseball world by storm. The Japanese sensation just recently became the first player in Major League Baseball history to make the all-star game as both a pitcher and a position player.
He currently leads the league in home runs with 33, he’s third in RBIs with 70, and he’s strung together a 4-1 record and 87 strikeouts in 13 starts on the mound. Some are even going so far as to compare him to the great Babe Ruth…
But for some reason, Stephen A. Smith does not believe that Ohtani would be a good face for the MLB. According to the First Take host, the fact that Ohtani needs an interpreter would make him less marketable. Here’s how he broke it down on today’s show.
“I don’t think it helps that the number one face is a dude that needs an interpreter so you can understand what the hell he’s saying in this country.”
So, what do you think? Does Ohtani’s need for an interpreter make him less marketable? Are you not as likely to watch him play because he can’t speak english? Or could this actually help him attract an even larger audience?
