Wander Franco had the internet talking after pulling off a risky throw against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
The Tampa Bay Rays shortstop appears to be having some fun playing the game of baseball this season. And he’s one of the reasons the Rays are flying in 2023.
The team appears to be gearing up to challenge for an AL East title and have won 13 straight games as of this Thursday.
Franco, once vaunted as one of the top MLB prospects, has lived up to the hype and is making an impact on several fronts. He has the fundamentals down, which is why he could afford to be as flashy as he was against the Pirates on Wednesday, turning a routine throw into an entertaining play.
As you’ll see in the video below, the Dominican Republic-born star fields the ball excellently before flipping it to himself and then throwing, catching the Bally Sports broadcast team off guard.
Some fans felt like it was too much, but not many people agreed.

Franco, 22, is one of six Tampa Bay players who have started the season batting over .300. The Rays are also the first team to get to the 20-game win mark in 2023 and are likely to be the first to 30 as well.
It appears they’re keen on adding a bit of flair to their play – at least Franco is.
