Just when you thought the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes couldn’t get more dramatic and chaotic…
Over the past few days, it has been reported that the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers are the front-runners for the two-way superstar. On Friday, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi sent social media into a frenzy when he reported that Ohtani was on his way to Toronto:
Fans on social media began tracking a private jet plane that was scheduled to land in Toronto on Friday evening. But according to CBC’s Devin Heroux, the private plane wasn’t carrying Ohtani, but rather Canadian businessman Robert Herjavec and his family.
Afterwards, Bob Nightengale of USA Today and other prominent MLB insiders reported that Ohtani is at his home in Southern California and NOT on his way to Toronto:

And so, fans on X (formerly known as Twitter), predictably went hectic over a) the conflicting reports about Ohtani flying to Toronto and b) Herjavec and his family being revealed as the passengers on the jet plane.
Amid all this chaos, it’s obvious that only Ohtani and his camp know what’s going on and who the real front-runner is. Perhaps Ohtani already knows who he’s going to sign with but is waiting patiently to announce it.
Fans may as well embrace all the drama and intensity coming out of these sweepstakes, because you may never see anything like it again. Athletes of Ohtani’s caliber rarely come around and hit the open market, after all.
