Arizona Diamondbacks shortshop Nick Ahmed has gone viral over the last two days after hitting a way-off pitch for a double on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals were playing the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a three-game series on Tuesday night. Facing Jordan Montgomery with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, Ahmed couldn’t lay off an 83 MPH pitch that bounced in the dirt.
Now, you see batters chasing those pitches and striking out all the time. But in a case of “Everybody gets one”, Ahmed got lucky by making solid enough contact on Montgomery’s pitch. The result? A two-run standup double:
The camera angles in the video below make this (unlikely) two-run double even more amazing.
As you could guess, social media had a lot to say on arguably the most impressive swing of Ahmed’s career. The 33-year-old himself even chimed in with a hilarious tweet:

It’s too bad the 2023 Masters’ tournament is over, because Ahmed could’ve put up quite the performance with a swing like that.
Regardless of your skill level in baseball, it is not recommended that you try to attempt what the two-time Gold Glover did on Tuesday night. Even the pros are lucky to get away with it.
The Diamondbacks went on to win the game 8-7 on Tuesday clinch the series. The Cardinals, however, avoided a sweep with a much-needed 11-8 victory on Wednesday.
Arizona will return to the field on Thursday to begin a four-game series at home against the San Diego Padres. As for the struggling Cardinals, they’ll get Thursday off before traveling to Seattle for a three-game weekend series against the Mariners.
