Baltimore Orioles shortstop Jorge Mateo suffered an elbow injury during a scary collision with teammate Gunnar Henderson during Tuesday’s game against the Miami Marlins.
In the bottom of the third inning of Tuesday’s contest at LoanDepot Park, Jorge Mateo and Gunnar Henderson both chased a groundball hit by Miami outfielder Jesús Sánchez toward second base.
Henderson managed to snag the ball in his glove, but he and Mateo immediately got tangled up in a scary collision. The slo-mo replay shows Mateo’s left elbow bending awkwardly as Henderson retrieves the ball:
Jorge Mateo had to leave the game that Miami went on to win 6-3. Fortunately, Henderson avoided an injury and batted leadoff in Wednesday’s contest, another 6-3 victory for the Marlins.
Per Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that Mateo suffered a left elbow transient dislocation. Hyde added that the 29-year-old shortstop will “miss some time.”

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Mateo has appeared in 68 games for the Orioles this season. He’s batting .229 with five homers, 18 RBI and a .668 OPS. Mateo is currently on pace for his best offensive season since 2021, when he batted .280 with a .748 OPS in 32 game appearances.
Orioles Could Trade For Insurance WIth Jorge Mateo Out
With the July 30 MLB trade deadline inching closer, the Orioles could look to add extra infielder depth with Mateo out indefinitely. Baltimore sits atop the AL East with a 60-41 record, and GM Mike Elias should be motivated to make a big splash or two after last year’s disappointing loss to the Texas Rangers in the ALDS.
The Orioles have only reached the ALCS once since 1998, resulting in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals in 2014. With the Orioles on their way to another postseason appearance, this is the time for Elias to get aggressive and maximize his team’s chances of winning a championship.
