Shohei Ohtani just signed with the Dodgers for 10 years and one fan base will be forced to ponder what-ifs after new information came out this week.
Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers shocked the world, but probably not the San Francisco Giants. One day after the Dodgers made the biggest deal in sports history by total value, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi told reporters that Ohtani’s camp had presented the exact deal to San Francisco, and the Giants were on board with doing it.
Ohtani turned down the opportunity and decided to do it with the Dodgers instead.
“The proposal that was made was very comparable if not identical to what he wound up agreeing to,” Zaidi said (via the Associated Press and San Francisco Chronicle). “… We said we were agreeable to it. It was going to come down to a choice by the player at that point.”
This news comes after the Giants struck out on several big-name free agents in recent years, including Yankees slugger Aaron Judge last offseason and now two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani this winter.

The Giants finished a disappointing 79-83 and missed out on the playoff for the second straight season.
The Dodgers have been one of the best teams in the entire MLB but they usually flame out come playoff time. Their last World Series title is not respected among fans since it came during a shortened COVID season in 2020.
With the emergence of Ohtani and how his deal is structured, the team is looking to create the next dynasty.
