The Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes are reportedly down to two powerhouses and World Series contenders.
According to veteran radio personality Gabriel Morency, it’s believed that the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers are the two finalists for the two-way superstar and 2023 American League MVP.
It was noted by Morency that the Chicago Cubs made an offer to the 29-year-old.
Morency has a long list of credits in the sports journalism world. He used to host a radio show for the Montreal Expos, who relocated to Washington in 2005. Morency also appears frequently on ESPN programming and does work for SportsGrid and Amazon Prime.
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the Dodgers, Blue Jays and World Series champion Texas Rangers “are chasing the biggest star in the sport.”
The Dodgers have been widely viewed as the front-runners due to their location (he apparently loves the Southern California region), their status as an annual World Series contender and of course the financial resources that will allow them to offer Ohtani the most money.

The biggest contract the Blue Jays have ever handed out was the six-year, $150 million deal to former Houston Astros star outfielder George Springer. The Jays are owned by one of Canada’s largest companies, Rogers Communications, and certainly have the financial resources as well to offer Ohtani the money he wants.
Ohtani batted .304 last season with 44 home runs, 95 RBI and a 1.066 OPS. As a pitcher, he went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 132 innings pitched.
