A blockbuster trade idea has the Los Angeles Angels sending two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to another big-market team.
Ohtani is entering the final year of his contract with the Angels. Though they remain in a tight race for a playoff spot, general manager Perry Minasian may have no choice but to trade Ohtani if the club doesn’t feel good about their chances of re-signing him.
MLB Network’s Bo Porter proposed an enticing trade idea that would see the Angels dealing Ohtani, outfielder Hunter Renfroe, third baseman Anthony Rendon and pitcher Chris Devenski to the New York Mets.
In return, the Angels would receive eight players: Third baseman Brett Baty, third baseman Eduardo Escobar, outfielder Starling Marte, pitcher Tylor Megill and four of the Mets’ top prospects in Kevin Parada, Ronny Mauricio, Blake Tidwell and Dominic Hamel.
The Mets entered the 2023 season with baseball’s highest payroll. But even the arrival of Cy Young-winning pitcher Justin Verlander hasn’t been enough to help the NL East club, who entered play on Friday with a disappointing 34-40 record.
Adding a player of Ohtani’s caliber would help the Mets both on the mound and in the lineup. And in Porter’s proposal, they’d get additional offense from Renfroe and hopefully Rendon, who has performed well below expectations since joining Los Angeles In 2020 on a $245 million deal.

But as long as the Angels remain in playoff contention, teams interested in Ohtani should keep their hopes of landing him minimal.
