The New York Mets are actively exploring ways to enhance their roster with superstar talent as they set their sights on a World Series title. After the historic signing of outfielder Juan Soto to the richest deal in sports, the Mets are eyeing the best suitors for their roster.
According to recent reports, the Mets are in discussions with the Toronto Blue Jays regarding the potential acquisition of four-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is entering his final year of team control, and the timing couldn’t be better. The Mets have reportedly checked in for the All-Star’s availability as SNY’s Andy Martino reported.
“The Mets have spoken with the Toronto Blue Jays this winter about Guerrero, league sources say, though those sources characterized the conversations as ‘checking in. It is far from certain that Guerrero will even be available in a trade, or that the Mets will have room left in the budget after signing other hitters and relievers,” Martino wrote.

However, with rumors swirling about Alonso’s status, the Mets are taking a proactive approach by considering Guerrero as a strong alternative.
“League sources who have spoken with Toronto this month say that the club is still weighing whether to extend their first baseman. Guerrero recently set a deadline of the first full day of spring training, saying that he will cut off extension talks at that point,” he added.
Acquiring Guerrero would require a significant financial commitment. He is currently earning $28.5 million, and projections suggest he could command a contract exceeding $500 million in free agency. With Guerrero’s extension talks with the Blue Jays on hold, the Mets remain in a position of opportunity.

The New York Mets Need Trade Adjustments Before Eyeing Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Before the New York Mets can vie for superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., they must first evaluate their roster and make strategic trade adjustments. They have a promising pool of prospects. The list includes Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, Ryan Clifford, and, notably, Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuña. And that can play in the team’s favor as the Mets possess the talent necessary to create a compelling trade package.

"The Mets are holding the line with Pete Alonso, and Steve Cohen fully supports David Stearns’ approach.
Among many alternatives, they have checked in on Vladimir Guerrero Jr."

Given that the Toronto Blue Jays may have difficulty retaining Guerrero long-term, the Mets should leverage their deep farm system to secure his services. A package that includes at least two or three of these MLB-ready players could be pivotal. It could allow the Mets to not only attract Guerrero but also to maintain a competitive edge in a league that is increasingly transactional.
Acquiring Guerrero Jr. would significantly enhance the Mets’ lineup, which already features formidable talents like Francisco Lindor and Soto. The combination of Guerrero’s power, illustrated by his thirty home runs and .323 batting average in the 2024 season, would make the Mets’ batting order one of the most fearsome in baseball.
