The New York Yankees have had quite a shopping spree recently. While they still look to add options to their lineup, they have a few decisions to clear up in mid-season. They have settled on an altered roster, particularly since they face a crucial void in their outfield lineup.
While captain Aaron Judge’s return after securing his second MVP award provides a solid foundation, the departure of star slugger Juan Soto to the New York Mets has left them with fewer options. Soto got off with a historic $765 million contract. Although to address concerns brimming after Soto’s absence, the Yankees have made a strategic to acquire former MVP Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs.
Following the trade for Bellinger, speculation rose regarding who would fill the left field position. Particularly as it has become increasingly evident that Alex Verdugo will not return to the Yankees. MLB insider Bryan Hoch reported that Verdugo will likely not be re-signed after a disappointing season. His career-worst statistics, including a .233 batting average and .647 OPS, have placed him in a precarious position leading into free agency.

And now, the Yankees would most certainly decide to part ways with the $9 million net worth of Verdugo. Recent reports suggest they are now eyeing top prospect Jasson Dominguez. Drafted as a promising talent at just 16 years old, Dominguez has been on the radar.
The New York Yankees Need To Accumulate Cash
The Yankees are currently navigating a tricky financial situation as they try to make the most of their roster while staying under the luxury tax threshold. With their salary allocations already nearing $299 million, there’s not much wiggle room for big moves. Ownership has made it clear that they want to keep expenses below the $301 million mark. These constraints have put a lot of pressure on the front office to think carefully about their next steps.

Recently, Jack Curry from YES Network hinted that there might be an avenue for the Yankees to free up some cash. He pointed to starting pitcher Marcus Stroman as a potential trade candidate. Given Stroman’s contract situation worth $18.5 million commitment for 2025 and a player option for 2026, trading him could provide a much-needed financial breather.
Stroman’s performance last season complicates the decision even further. With a 4.31 ERA and a drop in effectiveness, he’s become a bit of a liability for the Yankees. There were early signs in his declining velocity that suggested trouble ahead. While he once seemed like a strong asset, the reality is that his value has diminished, making a trade more appealing. If the Yankees can successfully move Stroman and absorb some of his salary, they could open up room in their budget.
