As part of an underage sex operation, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox was taken into custody in Florida on Monday. According to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, Maddox was one of 27 individuals detained during a multi-agency investigation.
Officials said Maddox and the other arrested individuals are suspected of requesting sex over the internet from people they think are youngsters.
Austin Maddox, a pitcher who briefly played for the Boston Red Sox in 2017, “traveled with the intent of engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old child,” Waters said at a news conference about the operation.
The 33-year-old allegedly began speaking with an undercover agent on April 28th while assuming the identity of a teenage girl, according to an arrest record that the Associated Press reported. Even after finding out that the girl was fourteen, he allegedly stated his intention to have sex with her. Authorities reported that he was apprehended at the place where he had scheduled to meet the girl.
According to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office video, Maddox “resisted arrest until our K-9 got involved.”
