Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been the subject of recent trade rumors amid the Blue Jays’ disappointing start to the 2024 season. Both “Vladdy” and star shortstop Bo Bichette are only under contract through 2025, so Toronto must soon decide on their plans for both.
The Blue Jays, coming off a fourth straight winning season and second straight trip to the playoffs, entered Wednesday with a 35-38 record, 5.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the final AL Wild Card spot.
And that means the Jays are likely to be sellers at the trade deadline for the first time in five years.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Could Be This Year’s Biggest Trade Chip
Widely regarded as a generational prospect entering his 2019 rookie year, Vladdy Jr. has been marred by inconsistent performance up to this point.
Guerrero Jr. had his best season in 2021, batting .311 with a .601 slugging percentage and a 1.002 OPS to go along with 48 homers and 111 RBI. But Vladdy hasn’t come close to those numbers since, with the .280 BA marking his personal best since 2021.
But Guerrero Jr. is still far better than most first basemen in baseball, and many reams will be willing to take a chance on him with the hope that he’ll regain that 201 MVP-like form. So between now and the offseason, expect the Guerrero Jr. trade rumors to heat up.
