Pete Alonso and the New York Mets seem to have fallen apart after their last attempt at a reunion failed. Alonso has been on the free-agent market for far too long. Despite his top performance and helping the team make it past the Wild Card round, the Mets have not kept “Polar Bear” as their priority.
Steve Cohen and his team recently signed Jesse Winker to a one-year deal. However, they did give it one last shot with the first baseman. It turns out that the Mets have offered Alonso a contract worth $68 to $70 million for three years, and the slugger rejected it.
Pete Alonso was ready to sign a short-term deal exclusively with the Mets. The chances of a reunion have diminished drastically after he rejected their last attempt. The slugger has made a bold decision to move away from Queens.
With several other teams in the mix, Alonso is ready to take the risk and wait for other offers. The Mets have done their part and are predicted to back out on Alonso after their final offer.
MLB Insider Jon Heyman Thinks Pete Alonso’s Demand Is Too High
Alonso drew criticism for MLB insider Jon Heyman after he rejected the last offer from the Mets. Heyman talked about Prince Fielder saying that those days were over. He also compared Freddie Freeman and Paul Goldschmidt’s contracts.
“I mean the days when Prince Fielder got $214 million for nine years, those seem to be long gone. I guess we got a hint of that recently with more recent signings. The Hall of Fame-bound World Series hero Freddie Freeman only got a $162 million deal, a lot of it deferred, worth about $140 million,” Heyman said.

Alonso might have had a great year with the Mets last season, but as Heyman says, it’s probably the money that is holding teams back.
“Paul Goldschmidt in his heyday, got $130 million. So the first base market, I want to say tanked it has certainly gone down,” Heyman continued.
Alonso has garnered interest from other teams, including the Blue Jays, but it might take him a while to seal a deal. On the other hand, Alex Bregman is predicted to sign with the Boston Red Sox.
