MLB fans aren’t happy with New York Mets’ star Pete Alonso for throwing a baseball — and not just any regular ball — into the stands in Friday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals
In the bottom half of the fifth inning against the Mets, infielder Masyn Winn legged out an infield single for his first career hit in the big leagues. As the St. Louis crowd gave Winn an ovation, Alonso casually chucked the ball into the stands:
Usually, the ball for an MLB player’s first career hit will be safely secured by team officials and kept as a special souvenir. But the Cardinals never got the chance to get the ball because of Alonso’s move.
Alonso’s action, predictably, drew the ire of many baseball fans.

But there is good news: John Denton of MLB.com reported that officials managed to get the baseball, and the fan who caught it will be awarded with an autographed hat, jersey and ball.
Alonso also expressed remorse after the game, saying he felt “horrible” and “awful” while adding that it was simply “a bad brain fart.”
The Mets emerged victorious 7-1 in a battle featuring two of baseball’s most disappointing teams.
It’s been a frustrating season for the Mets, who entered 2023 as a prime World Series favorite after signing future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. But the Mets ultimately sold at the deadline, dealing away Verlander and fellow ace pitcher Max Scherzer.
