Pete Alonso’s waiting for the right opportunity to come his way, but time is of the essence. Spring training is set to begin in February, and pitchers will soon start reporting. The New York Mets seem to have shied away from Alonso, and other teams are yet to give him an offer.
Alonso’s free agency is taking longer than expected. A number of teams have expressed interest in the first baseman, but he was keen on joining the Mets. The slugger is ready to join the team for a short-term deal. However, things are slipping away for both. Steve Cohen and his squad might not be interested in Alonso after all.
The latest Alonso update could send him to an AL West team. On Thursday, Alonso met with the Los Angeles Angels. Apart from the Angels, the Toronto Blue Jays are looking for a way to add the star slugger. The Blue Jays have acquired Anthony Santander, but Pete Alonso might be the best fit for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base.
As for the Mets, they have shown interest in trading for Spencer Torkelson from the Detroit Tigers. The Mets need to fill their first base position with a suitable player. With things not going the right way with “Polar Bear,” they must move on.

Blue Jays Continue To Be In Hot Pursuit Of Pete Alonso
If the Mets sign Torkelson, a reunion with Alonso is over. After signing Juan Soto and retaining a few other players like Jesse Winker, the Mets have spent a significant amount this free agency. Cohen is probably the only one to pay a huge sum this offseason without deferred payouts.
The Angels are desperate to make a move before the regular season. Signing Alonso will be a huge benefit alongside Mike Trout. The Angels want to be a competitive team, and Alonso will boost the offense with Trout and Rendon. On the other hand, the Blue Jays are in hot pursuit of the first baseman.

Toronto might be interested in Pete Alonso, but that would put Guerrero’s future in doubt. Or, the Blue Jays are playing it safe to secure a first baseman if Guerrero departs from the team.
Torkelson will be easy on the pockets for the Mets, especially after his slumping season in 2024. Pete Alonso and the Mets reunion seems to be far from possible right now. Top teams like the Yankees are continuing their pursuit of free agents.
