As the 2025 MLB Spring Training approaches, top-tier teams are packing their roster with what can bring them the World Series glory. And recent trade development for Nolan Arenado has given the league hope for a dream offense lineup.
The Boston Red Sox are actively seeking a right-handed bat to add to their lineup, and Arenado fits just right to their needs. The Gold Glove-winning third baseman currently at the St. Louis Cardinals camp has emerged as a key target. While the Red Sox originally set their sights on Alex Bregman, his desire for a long-term deal has made things bitter.
However, Boston isn’t the only team interested in Arenado. The New York Yankees are also vying for the Cardinals star, making the competition fierce. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow faces the challenge of devising a compelling offer that stands out among these suitors. Although the Cardinals seem inclined to move on from the 33-year-old, Arenado’s hefty $21 million salary for the season is the only worry.

However, the prospect of acquiring Arenado has become increasingly attractive, especially since he has expressed a willingness to waive his no-trade clause to play at Fenway Park. Interestingly, the latest reports suggest that St. Louis may be open to negotiating terms. Perhaps they are even willing to absorb a portion of Arenado’s contract to facilitate a deal.
Bringing Arenado to Boston would present an exciting opportunity for the team. Unlike Bregman, who has the flexibility to play multiple positions, Arenado is a traditional third baseman through and through. Despite this limitation, manager Alex Cora would be more than capable of integrating him into the lineup effectively.
The Yankees Might Get The Nolan Arenado Bout
While the Yankees as well as the Red Sox have equal chances to materialize the deal, NY could have the upperhand. According to reports from MLB insider John Denton, the Yankees have reignited their interest in acquiring Nolan Arenado.

General Manager Brian Cashman has already said that the Yankees are still exploring options for their infield. He said that the door remains open for a trade. Despite the competition for hitters like Alex Bregman, who remains unsigned, the Yankees seem less inclined to commit to a long-term deal. And that makes Arenado an attractive, albeit complicated, option.

Recent discussions between the Yankees and the Cardinals picked pace after the Cardinals struggled to make progress on other trade fronts throughout January. Denton noted that the Cardinals are actively re-engaging teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers to explore potential deals for Arenado.
However, acquiring the 10-time Gold Glover will not come easy. He is still owed $74 million over the next two years and has a no-trade clause, which he has already used to decline a trade with the Houston Astros. These factors will require the Yankees to manage their payroll carefully and potentially absorb some of Arenado’s salary to make a deal happen.
