If Cam Newton believes baseball is a dying sport, he might need to think twice. The former NFL quarterback recently got a reality check from the New York Mets coach. And what he said in response to Newton’s analogy is unmissable.
The recent offseason has seen the Los Angeles Dodgers attract enough eyeballs with their flurry of high-profile signings. But not everyone is convinced that their aggressive spending is beneficial for the overall landscape of baseball. The Mets coach Eric Chavez voiced his concerns about this approach, asking rhetorically whether what the Dodgers are doing is truly good for the game.
“I’m just glad I’m with an owner now that is willing to compete in the current climate. Is it a sustainable business plan? I have no idea, the next agreement should be interesting. Baseball is exciting – Cam Newton, I disagree. Baseball ain’t going nowhere my friend. Come on out to a set, you’ll fall in love with baseball dude – bring your hats,” Chavez said through his Instagram story.

"Is what the Dodgers are doing good for baseball? I don't know.
I'm excited for 2025, I'll tell you that. First thing I did was look on the schedule and see when we're playing them. I can't wait.

Chavez’s comments were aimed at the Dodgers going above and beyond to leverage their purse depth to make the signings. The current league is not sitting with their extravagant motives. They recently signed Roki Sasaki, along with five other top names. Chavez is preparing for the Mets’ upcoming season against the Dodgers. He expressed a mix of excitement and nostalgia. This feeling comes from his experiences during his playing days against the New York Yankees.

The Mets are looking to potentially acquire superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from the Toronto Blue Jays. As the Mets navigate their ongoing negotiations with first baseman Pete Alonso, the allure of Guerrero has captured their attention. The Blue Jays, determined to keep their franchise player, are actively working to secure an extension.

However, the Mets could capitalize on the situation if Toronto becomes resigned to the possibility of losing Guerrero in free agency. To successfully land the dynamic first baseman, reports suggest that the Mets would need to part ways with two of their top prospects, Jett Williams and Jonah Tong, who have both shown great promise in the minor leagues.
Acquiring Guerrero, who is rumored to be seeking a staggering $450 million extension, would be a risky yet potentially transformative decision for the Mets. Owner Steve Cohen has made it clear that he is willing to spend big to bring superstars to New York, and the opportunity to sign Guerrero could be too enticing to pass up.
