While everyone seems to have their eyes on Juan Soto, several free agents like Jorge Polanco have not hit the headlines until now. The Houston Astros have one of their best players on the free agent market. Astros manager Dana Brown said he’s keen on signing Alex Bregman, but they are yet to progress with an offer.
Bregman has garnered interest from several teams, including the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. The latest update is that the Astros are leaning toward Polanco as a backup plan for Bregman. Polanco will be easy on the pocket for the franchise, and MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes that Polanco is a fallback option.
“The Houston Astros are continuing their efforts to re-sign Bregman while also setting up contingencies. The team is staying in contact with Adames and has expressed interest in another free agent, Jorge Polanco, as a fallback option,” Rosenthal wrote via the Athletic.
Rosenthal also stated that the Astros have also shown interest in Willy Adames. However, he feels that Bregman would be a better option to consider.
“In the case of Adames, if the Astros are going to spend that kind of money, why not invest it in Bregman, a face of their franchise?” Rosenthal continued.
Jorge Polanco Could Bring Versatility To The Astros
Signing Jorge Polanco could get the Astros a slight advantage. Polanco is a switch-hitter who could bring versatility to the team. Polanco will also add some depth to the in-field. Yet, Polanco alone will not be enough to bolster the team.

Bregman is the face of the Astros, and he has a better record than Polanco. Astros fans love Bregman, and he’s well aware of the team and how it functions. Moreover, other Astros stars like Jose Altuve are keen on bringing Bregman back to the team.
Jorge Polanco underwent surgery on his left knee a few months back. The slugger had experienced some trouble playing on his left side of the plate. However, he’s expected to be back to form by Spring Training.
Despite his trouble, Polanco smashed 16 home runs, recorded 45 RBIs, and drove in 43 runs in 417 appearances at the plate. As for Bregman, competition seems to grow daily as several teams are ready to pursue the slugger.
