It’s either a hit or a miss with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays have been lagging behind in retaining Guerrero. The All-Star slugger declined their offer as he looks forward to a deal close to $450 million or more.
Guerrero would not hesitate to jump ship if the right offer was presented to him. With Pete Alonso and the New York Mets falling apart, MLB insider Buster Olney believes Guerrero could take his spot.
The Mets need a first baseman, and Guerrero will be the perfect fit. According to Olney, Steve Cohen and his team are keen on pursuing Guerrero. Alonso’s stint with the team is almost over, which paves the way for Vladdy.
“The Mets from what I’m told really want Vladdy. Can you imagine Soto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both in their mid-twenty’s going back to back as two great power hitters who don’t strike out very much it would be dynamic,” Olney said via The Michael Kay Show.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And The Blue Jays Are Still Far Apart From A Deal
Toronto recently signed free-agent slugger Anthony Santander. The Blue Jays have been steering away from Guerrero by adding other players to the team. Many feel the franchise should have put in effort to retain Guerrero than signing Santander.
Toronto and Guerrero are still far apart from a multi-year deal. Vladdy is a Canadian citizen who loves to be in Toronto. Yet, the money plays a crucial part here. The slugger needs more than what the Blue Jays offered.

After proving to be a top performer, it’s fair for Vladdy to demand at least half of Juan Soto’s contract. Olney thinks the Blue Jays could pivot and pursue other sluggers by moving on from Vladdy.
“They could pivot and pay Pete Alonso or an Alex Bregman to be the signature star. At that point, maybe they move on past Vladimir Guerrero Jr.” Olney continued.
Apart from the Blue Jays buzz, the Atlanta Braves have shown interest in signing top players before spring training gets underway.
