The Toronto Blue Jays were behind multiple free agents this offseason, but their moves have not pleased their fans. Toronto is one team that needs to add star players if it wants to make the playoffs.
While they continue their race to pursue sluggers and pitchers, the team is still dealing with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The All-Star became the highest-paid player to receive $28.5 million for the 2025 season. The biggest issue is when he hits the free-agent market after this season.
Guerrero wants close to $400 million, but the Blue Jays are hesitant. MLB broadcaster Michael Kay slammed the team for stalling Guerrero’s contract.
“You’re the team that can’t keep players. There’s a home grown Blue Jay, a Canadian citizen, who enjoys it there wants to be there and if it takes $400 million dollars, you mean the Rogers family can’t afford $400 million? They own all of cable in the entire country. They are nowhere near the tax thresholds,” Kay said via the Michael Kay Show.
Blue Jays In Desperation After Losing Roki Sasaki
Toronto lost the race to the Dodgers after Roki Sasaki declined to go north. While that might not be the team’s fault, they are now in a desperate situation to sign top players. Anthony Santander has been one of their primary targets this offseason.
On the other hand, a number of players were on their list. Toronto has played a game of waiting, and none of their rumors were actually put to paper. Spring training is not far away, and it’s time for the Blue Jays to act quickly.

If they fail to sign Santander, they could be left with Pete Alonso or Alex Bregman. The demand for Alonso and Bregman is higher than Santander. Toronto could lose all three free agents if they don’t pursue one. Moreover, as many believe, they should focus on retaining Guerrero for the future.

Ross Atkins has upset his fan base. Entering the 2025 season with the same lineup is not going to change things for the team. Losing out on Guerrero would be a disaster they must try to avoid. For now, their focus remains on Santander.
