Pete Alonso is currently in a tough spot after turning down a big contract offer from the New York Mets. Although there has been much buzz around his signing, any offer on the table is coming with ifs and buts.
According to MLB analyst Andy Martino, Alonso’s decision might not have been the best move, especially as he explores potential deals with other teams like the Toronto Blue Jays. Martino pointed out that the Mets’ final offer was around $70 million over three years with some added deferred money, and it is likely a challenging deal for Alonso to beat elsewhere.
“The final Mets offer that Alonso turned down, that’s gonna be tough for him to beat with the Blue Jays. That was the $70 million that we talked about for three years, additional deferred money. That could’ve been a real win, probably in what the ultimate dollar figure would’ve looked like for Alonso,” Martino said.

Looking at the recent contract signed by the Blue Jays’ Anthony Santander can give some insight into Alonso’s situation. Santander’s five-year deal is worth $92.5 million, but its current value is only about $68.6 million due to deferred payments.
“Given what the Blue Jays gave [Anthony] Santander, it was in the 60s after the deferred money. They’re probably not gonna get as good an offer from Toronto as they’ve already gotten from the Mets, and turned down from the Mets,” he added.
This suggests the Blue Jays may not be able to offer Alonso the kind of money he received from the Mets. And that has a lot to do with them aiming to extend their star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. This situation leaves Alonso in a difficult position, as he may have to settle for less than he initially hoped.

Mets Have To Do The Math If Pete Alonso Ditches Them
If Alonso decides to sign with another team, the Mets could find themselves scrambling to fill his shoes. While it’s likely that Mark Vientos would step up to play first base, with Brett Baty taking over at third. Some experts, like Christopher Kline from FanSided, have a much more exciting idea. What if the Mets made a blockbuster trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., one of the brightest stars in baseball?
Guerrero is entering the last year of his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. And if an extension doesn’t happen soon, he could become a free agent after the season. That puts the Blue Jays in a tricky position. They want to stay competitive, especially after adding Anthony Santander to their roster.
"To put the blame on Stearns or Cohen, that's just foolish. This is on Pete Alonso, not the Mets."

But if Guerrero doesn’t want to stick around, the Mets might want to swoop in. They have the money to not only trade for him but also to re-sign him, especially with the chance to play alongside superstars like Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor.
If this dream scenario comes true, Guerrero will take over at first base, hitting right behind Soto in the lineup. This would shift Vientos to third base and leave Baty available as a strong option coming off the bench.
