The Milwaukee Brewers have given one of their top prospects a lucrative $80 million contract, despite the fact he’s never played a professional game.
Per a report from MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Brewers are giving 19-year-old centerfielder and prospect Jackson Chourio an eight-year, $80 million deal that includes a pair of team options.
Heyman noted that this is the richest contract for a minor leaguer by a wide margin, too. The previous record contract for a minor league player was Luis Robert, who signed a $50 million deal with the Chicago White Sox back in 2020.
The Brewers’ decision to hand Chourio a massive deal like this surprised many, since they’re a small market team that rarely hands out lucrative contracts. It just goes to show how much faith the organization has in Chourio, who turns 20 next March.
The Brewers signed Chourio back in Jan. 2021 two months before his 17th birthday. MLB.com ranks him as the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball, behind only Baltimore Orioles infielder prospect Jackson Holliday.
