The sports cards and memorabilia market has gone wild over the last couple of years, with prices of rare items skyrocketing to amounts we have never seen before.
A Diego Maradona jersey from when he scored his infamous “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup sold in May of this year for a whopping $9.2 million, setting the record for most expensive sports item ever sold.
That record appears to be in danger because a rare Mickey Mantle rookie card from 1952 is going up for auction next month and is expected to fetch more than $10 million.
The card is graded at a 9.5 out of 10, as it has very tiny flaws. Another 1952 Mantle rookie card sold in January 2021 for $5.2 million, but that one was graded at a 9 out of 10.
The record right now for most expensive card ever sold is $6.6 million for a T206 Honus Wagner that sold in August 2021. It looks like The Mick is going to take down both of these records.
It will take someone with very deep pockets to win this bid. However, it is likely to be a great investment, as it seems the prices of these rare pieces of sports history continue to climb at a record pace.
