Fenway Park has seen its fair share of memorable moments since opening 111 years ago, but what happened on a casual Wednesday night in August will certainly do down as one of the whackier occurrences in the ballpark’s history.
In the top of the second inning in Wednesday’s game between the visiting Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox, KC outfielder Kyle Isbel managed to find the perfect placement for a hit off of pitcher Nick Pivetta.
Isbel lifted a ball towards the Green Monster. From the camera angle on the TV broadcast, it initially looked as though Boston outfielder Masataka Yoshida made the catch.
Nope. Instead, the 26-year-old Isbel managed to hit the ball into one of the scoreboard lights on the Green Monster. The play was ruled a ground-rule double, and it advanced third baseman Matt Duffy to third.
That’s a rather lucky break there for the Red Sox, because Duffy could have definitely scored if the ball bounced off the wall.

But Pivetta pitched his way out of further harm, getting Maikel Garcia to fly out to right on the next at-bat. Boston went on to win 4-3 to take the third contest of a four-game set, and they’ll try to win the series 3-1 on Thursday evening.
With the Toronto Blue Jays also winning on Wednesday (1-0 over the Cleveland Guardians), Boston is five games out of the final wild card spot in the American League.
