A year ago, when the San Diego Padres acquired Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals, it seemed unthinkable that a Soto trade would be an option. As you know, things change quickly in Major League Baseball.
The San Diego Padres are in the midst of a disappointing 52-55 season that currently has the 2022 National League runners-up sitting multiple games behind the last spot in the National League Wild Card race. San Diego, which entered this season with every intent to go all-in for a World Series title, just might become a seller at the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
If Soto is going o be on the move yet again, one team is already emerging as a possible suitor.
According to a Sportsbook, the Atlanta Braves are the favorites right now to land him. The Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies round out the top-5.
The Padres aren’t out of the playoff race by any means, but it does not appear they will ever truly get back on track to actually looking like a contender.
Not to mention, the team is already in a tough spot right now considering that Snell and Hader are both free agents after this season.

San Diego could simply trade both players as well as Soto with an eye toward 2024 and beyond. The fact of the matter is that the Padres farm system is depleted after the major moves they made last year at the deadline to get both Hader and Soto.
They should make a move now to secure a future that won’t be there if they stay right as they are.
